Suggestions for QU

Hi everyone, please post to here any helpful suggestions you have from today's class discussion regarding careers, internships, and improving the education at QU. Thanks as always for an interesting class discussion!

  1. I thought today’s discussion was very interesting. It is always nice and thought provoking to hear everyone’s thoughts and suggestions about how to improve our continuing education and growth at Quinnipiac. I completely agree with Tamara when she said there are certain email addresses I see when I get the email to my smartphone that I just automatically delete. I know I’m guilty of it but it’s such a shame that certain messages cannot be relayed effectively to students because they have these preconceived notions when they see who they’re getting the email from. I do not even see a solution for this, unfortunately. I do think it would be effective, however, to have a student representative from say the senior class business majors to relay certain information to other students and be a “go to” person or middle man between maybe Jill in Career Services and students or a certain professor and students. I think that although sometimes students don’t like to be talked to by peers because they may feel they are not as “good” as them, I think it is effective and some students find it easier to talk to a student who is “on their level” versus a professor. I loved talking to my team consultants when I had them for MG 301 and MG 210. I felt comfortable and felt they understood me more. They were also easier to reach and contact and get a response from immediately. I still think there are certain things students will have to talk to professors privately and directly about, but I think having someone more on the “same level” as you is a possibility that would be effective. I also think it is a shame that internships are not pushed as much from advisors and professors. I have had an internship but it was something I got through a family friend and it was never brought up to me about doing it for credit at Quinnipiac. I think that it should be pushed more and conveyed in the proper way so students understand what it entails and what the requirements are. I overall do think Quinnipiac, namely the Business School, because that’s what I know, does a good job at providing experiences for students. In talking to some friends who are in business programs at other schools, they do not have things like Dean’s Distinguished Speakers or Resume review sessions provided to them. However, I do have other friends at other schools that seem to have the opportunities we have but have more success with them and I would attribute that success with those schools to the way they convey information to students. I think Quinnipiac is somewhere in between, but on its way to great things and even bigger and better opportunities. It is all about the way it is executed and portrayed to students and I think a good start is with the projects like the Career Connections group and Chris and Tamara’s group on the internship opportunity topic and such. I’ve said since day one, making changes starts with the students and reaching them, and this class so far via our projects has been doing that and I think we are all on the way to helping bring to Quinnipiac’s attention the alterations that need to be made to ensure success for the school and therefore for the students as well.

  2. There were many interesting topics discussed in class today. One topic that stood out to me was the peer tutors that are placed in the FIN 201 classes. Personally without my peer tutor I am not sure I would have done well in the class. I found it helpful because as a recent student who has taken the class, the tutor has a better grasp on what is troubling students from a student perspective. In terms of internships I think it would be great to have a database of internship reviews. Past interns could even post their names to be contacted about their position if they would allow. I agree with a major part of people not doing internship for credit is the cost. When you think about it, I am literally paying for the number three to appear on my transcript. Quinnipiac is really in no way involved with my internship during the summer. Regarding social network sites, I think that they should only be used when initial interaction has been completed. The idea of posting jobs on Facebook, is interesting. This might be a way to force people into the job search since it is such a frequently visited site.

In terms of career service internet options, I agree that it would be helpful to have someone available to answer questions through instant messaging. While I am not sure if QU would have the man power for this, I think students would be receptive to it. It might also be interesting if QUCC had a blog or a discussion board. I think students can learn a lot from other students. This relates to the peer mentoring article. While I am not sure it would be a mentoring relationship, I think it would be nice to have an open forum where students can discuss career related issues.

  3. In class we discussed alot of interesting points however the most notable part of our discussion was the possibility of having teachers assistant for some management classes.
I think that it would be a great idea considering some teachers are not always available and also some teachers can be difficult to understand. Having a teachers assistant would allow a peer to help if there are any questions regarding the class or a test or homework. I personally could have used this type of thing in a couple of classes that I have had with a specific teachers who I have difficulty understanding.

  4. I thought yesterdays discussion was extremely relevant and helpful to us and moreso to rising juniors and seniors here at Quinnipiac.

With regards to Katie's comment about an "internship database" I think this is a fabulous idea that would be extremely helpful to the entire student body and Jill Ferrall. This information would be extremely helpful to rising Juniors and Seniors who are looking to get an internship and would explain the real experience students just like them had at the company, beyond the company description of the internship. This would also affiliate wonderful companies with Quinnipiac's students and be beneficial to Quinnipiac's reputation in the competitive business world we all face today.

Secondly, I thought Chris Brower's suggestion of a mini seminar/lab type class on how to use outlook and blackboard effectively would be extremely beneficial to freshman students. I still know seniors today that do not know how to log into outlook and schedule an appointment with a professor by looking at their schedule. Or simple functions in blackboard that everyone should know to use. Just as Katie stated in class I felt very disconnected in MG240 when our professor had to review basic functions in WORD and EXCEL that I had been using for years while some students claimed they were helpless. I felt half the course was a waste of my money and I really enjoyed the Access part but did nto get to spend more than two weeks on it, which was too bad.

Overall I really enjoyed todays discussion and hope some of these suggestions are taken seriously because they would benefit both the student body and professors.

  5. Yesterday's class discussion was interesting. I definitely agree with pretty much everyone in class that QU should definitely refine the way in which students view their QU email. I'm not sure if this is possible but I think it would be helpful to everyone if all of our email accounts came with folders set up that automatically sorted our email between email that is sent by a professor, athletics, campus events, etc. That way, when we do get so many athletic emails or Brown emails we will not miss important ones from professors. I don't believe that explaining to students how to set up the folders is the answer because there are still going to be students who will not set them up.

  6. In class when discussing the Johns Hopkins curriculum, I really think that would be a beneficial way of studying. Allowing a student to learn on their own schedule and own pace, gives them a level of creativity. On one hand they can slack off and get their "C degree". On the other hand they can open channels of creativity that may take longer than normal classes but allows the student to grow. I really like this style of learning because I believe that it prepares young minds best for future endeavors and Johns Hopkins reputation is extremely prestigious so it must be working.

  7. Better late then never...

From what I can recall from our discussion on Tuesday, it was one that was really productive and produced some really great thoughts.

I like what Mellisa and Tamara were talking about in regards to emails and how they are so often overlooked because we are inudated with so many each day. I think it would be benefical to do something like Chris said where outlook automatically organizes your mail into folders. So everything from the B-School go in one folder etc...

I also enjoyed our disscussion on Thursday about implementing a team focus SB class for incoming Freshman. As we mentioned in class it is something that will give them a leg up on their competition if they were able to succeed in team base envornments from the day the walk in the door.

  8. Regarding the sustainability topics that we unfortunately will not get the chance to discuss during class time, I was intrigued by many people's articles. I noticed a common theme, that we have discussed before in class, that it is about the students and creating awareness. Part of my project on healthcare sustainability focuses on that, so seeing that as a common theme in other people's articles was great. I liked the article on "Recycle Mania". I thought it was creative and a good incentive for students to reach out and recycle more. It's innovative ideas like that, that can help get the word out there. I also see from people's questions that they want to compare QU to efforts and topics addressed in the articles. I think QU is behind, but on its way and has potential to becoming more of a sustainable campus. I think the right thoughts and tactics are just about there, they just need to be implemented correctly to get students to understand and follow along to help make a difference.

  9. The article which stands out to me is the one regarding University recycling. I feel that students here at QU have good intentions to recycle yet rarely do. For example, when throwing out paper how many actually put the paper in the blue bin instead of the general trash? Even in the cafĂ© there are bins next to the trash conveyor belt but I never see anyone throw anything in them. Furthermore for those that do use the recyclable bins, does QU even follow through and recycle the materials. I highly doubt it, I personally feel that it all goes to the same garbage dump, not separated. The article discusses how some universities partake in a Recyclemania program. I think this might be a good initiative to get students to commit to recycling. The article says that everyone on campus becomes committed because everyone’s in the competition since the ranking is campus wide. It is so hard to get students to partake in events; I would be interested to see how this program would play out at QU.
